Photography initiative for residents and families

A professional photography project has been launched by an aged care manager based in Melbourne.

The initiative, My Legacy Story, is launching in 2025 and aims to provide residents and their families with opportunities to create and preserve memories through professional photography sessions.

“Over the years, I’ve seen many families express regret about not having enough photos of their parents or grandparents before they passed away. I want to help families have something that they are all proud of, and that they can hold onto forever,” said Michelle Chen, a dedicated care manager with 16 years of experience in the aged care sector.

Photography has long been recognised as a powerful tool to evoke memories and foster connections. In aged care, it offers even more profound benefits:

  • Memory stimulation: Viewing photos can help residents recall significant life events and loved ones, particularly those experiencing dementia or cognitive decline.
  • Emotional wellbeing: Photos create a sense of belonging and continuity, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering joy.
  • Strengthening family bonds: Professional photographs provide a timeless way for families to celebrate the legacy of their loved ones.

“Many residents have shared stories of their youth and their families,” Chen said. “But often, these stories aren’t accompanied by photos, which could make these memories even more tangible and impactful for their families. I can’t go back to the past to take shots of them then, but I can ensure that their images are captured now, close to the end of their life.”

Starting in early 2025, Chen’s project will partner with aged care facilities to offer tailored photography packages for staff, residents and their families. These sessions will be designed to capture the essence of each individual, their relationships and their unique stories.

“This is a personal project for me, born from my passion for both aged care and photography. I want to create a service that not only enhances the lives of residents but also leaves a lasting legacy for their families. I’m excited about the possibilities this initiative will bring,” Chen said.

The project is also aimed at raising awareness about the emotional and psychological benefits of capturing and preserving memories through photography. “I believe every family deserves the chance to look back with joy and connection, rather than regret,” Chen said.
