Workshop on how culture influences dementia

Almost half a million Australians are currently living with dementia, with one in three of these people born overseas.

To improve the understanding of, and ability to provide, culturally safe and appropriate care, the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) is hosting a workshop for researchers and health professionals interested in how culture influences dementia.

The online workshop will be held on 15 February from 9:30 am to 12 noon. For more information, visit: https://www.nari.net.au/Event/professional-development-workshop-150223.

The evidence-based workshop, to be conducted by Professor Bianca Brijnath and Dr Josefine Antoniades, will cover:

  • challenges and opportunities for services given the changing demographic profile of Australia’s older population;
  • how to negotiate diverse cultural understandings of dementia and care;
  • how to communicate with culturally diverse families about dementia;
  • how to access resources.

Brijnath is the Divisional Director of Social Gerontology at the National Ageing Research Institute. Her disciplinary training is in medical anthropology and public health and her research expertise is in cultural diversity, dementia and mental health.

Antoniades is a Research Fellow at NARI in the Division of Social Gerontology. Her research interests include dementia, mental health and health literacy in culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Antoniades is the project manager on Moving Pictures — a national project that aims to raise dementia awareness in culturally and linguistically diverse communities through the use of film and digital media.
